Additions to Practical Life

If you’re familiar with Montessori then you understand the theory behind the Practical Life Activities. We wrote about all the wonderful things that Practical Life lessons lead to in this article, and how Practical Life is the foundation of Montessori. If you’ve used Montessori in your home or school, you’ll understand the need to switch out and add in Practical Life activities. Sometimes it’s the season that calls for it, other times it is the children and their interests that call for a new activity. The Practical Life activities on your shelf are only limited by your own imagination. You can make… Read full article.

Endothermic or Ectothermic Animals?

I’ll say it one more time … children love learning about animals! And there are so many interesting concepts that are applicable to animals. Recently we’ve covered animal camouflage, venomous or poisonous animals & plants, oviparous or viviparous animals, and so many other great animal lessons. We’ve just added a new lesson to the Science/Animals section of our online store:

Montessori Book List

Montessori Book List

Many of you have been asking for it (for a while now) … a Montessori Book List. It’s been compiled using the books that we’ve read and currently have on our book shelf. These books primarily cover children from birth to 6 years of age.Montessori Book List

Children become like the things they love.

Children become like the things they love.

You know the saying “you are what you eat” …. well consider that children become like the things they love. It may make you think twice about everything in the environment that you create for your children.
An excerpt from “The Absorbent Mind” by Maria Montessori.
“To care for, and keep awake, the guide within every child is therefore a matter of the first importance. The comparison we have already made helps us to understand this power the child has of absorbing from his surroundings. There are some insects which look like leaves and other which look like stalks. They pass their lives on leaves and stalks, which they resemble so perfectly as to seem completely one with them. Something like this happen in the child. He absorbs the life going on about him and becomes one with it, just as these insects become one with the vegetation on which they live. The child’s impressions are so profound that a biological or psycho-chemical change takes place, by which his mind ends by resembling the environment itself. Children become like the things they love.

Venomous or Poisonous? Animals & Plants

It’s a common mistake to think that venomous and poisonous mean the same thing. But they don’t! Venom is used to describe a toxin that is delivered with specialized organs by stinging or biting (using stingers, fangs, a proboscis or tentacles). Box jellyfish, scorpions, and saddleback caterpillars are venomous. Venomous animals inject venom into their prey when hunting. Poisonous creatures and plants have a toxin but have no method of delivery. They have to be eaten or touched to be harmful. Poison dart frogs, red spotted newts, and amanitas mushrooms are poisonous. When another animal (or human) eats the poisonous animal or plant, the predator may become ill or even die. Do your children understand the difference between venomous or poisonous animals and plants?

You can teach them the difference using a new Montessori material we’ve just listed in our online store!
