Short Poetry for Children
An important material to have in your classroom or homeschool environment is short poetry for children.
Poetry can delight, excite, and inspire children to write creatively. The great beauty of poetry lies in its ability to become a shared experience between the reader and writer. Through the power of poetry, readers are able to make connections to the poems they read. By bringing their own background experience to the poem, young readers find more meaning in them and are able to appreciate them more.
Start children off with short poems for listening, reading, and copy work. To make this process easier we’ve put together 10 cards of short poetry and they are available for FREE! (scroll to the bottom of the Free Downloads page)
The following short poems are included:
- A House Is a House For Me
- Little Kitten
- The Little Seed
- Autumn Leaves
- The Whale
- Grandfather’s Fish
- The Moon

Why are there so many color combinations for the printed Moveable Alphabet?
Question: “I have been considering getting your movable alphabet along with some pink
series cards for my 3-1/2 year old. Why is the alphabet in so many colors?”
Answer: Our Printed Moveable Alphabet comes with a variation of colors that you can
choose the colors that best match your Montessori language materials. The consonants are in one color, the vowels in another. This helps the child to identify the vowel sounds with greater ease.

Language Training Used In Montessori and Free Download
Definition of Language:
a systematic means of communicating ideas or feelings by the use of conventionalized signs, sounds, gestures, or marks, that have understood meanings.
Language is a vital human phenomenon; it lives, changes, and dies.
Language is specifically a human expression and it should be a delight!
Language is learned and not inborn.
The mental capacity for creating language is unique; it allows the child to speak the language (mother tongue) correctly even if it is the most complicated language. The child has all he needs to prepare for language – therefore, put into his environment, he absorbs completely and with little effort, the language of his group. Until the child is age six he absorbs everything with little effort. After age 6 the child is able to learn a new language but it is only with a conscious effort that this can be done.
It is important to remember that language is a point of departure – not a point of arrival. The world is opened up to the child when he is given rich vocabulary that is rooted in reality. It is a means for understanding the world around him and it drives the child to seek out the truths of the world.

Extension lessons for the Moveable Alphabet
One of the tutorials included in the “How To…” section on our website is how to make a moveable alphabet. The Moveable Alphabet is a wonderful language material that gives a child the ability to express what is in his mind, without the need for skillful manipulation of a pencil.
The ability to manipulate the letters and create the words a child is thinking of, removes a lot of the frustration that children experience if they have difficulty putting a pencil to paper. Review the tutorial, and make yourself a printable Moveable Alphabet – your child will love it!
Printable Picture Cards
Also available in our Moveable Alphabet section: printable Moveable Alphabet picture cards. These picture cards are an extension lesson that can be used as visual prompts to help children work independently with the Moveable Alphabet. The picture cards are grouped by skill level, so that the children work successfully within their current skill level. These picture cards can be used to create words with either our printable Moveable Alphabet, or the large wooden Moveable Alphabet.
Our picture cards come in two sizes, with or without color-coding. The color-coded set follows our Pink Blue Green Language Series and the set without color-coding follows our Step 1, 2, 3 Language Series (you can read more about this language system in our Language FAQ’s).
Sound Cards for the Printable Moveable Alphabet
Sound cards are another extension for the moveable alphabet. They allow the child additional time to explore sounds and complete words that are missing either the initial sounds, vowel sounds, or ending sounds. We have sound cards for the large wooden Moveable Alphabet and also for our Printable Moveable Alphabet – since we know there are so many of you who have made your own set.
Available in 3 color combinations (red/blue, pink/blue, blue/red) and for initial, vowel or final sounds in our Moveable Alphabet section:
